First post of 2015, what should it be about?

Hmmm… How about surveying the teams’ positions in the NBA standings? Hey, that’s a great idea! Boy, I love my ideas sometimes.

Honestly, what better time there is to do that? End of the season? Nah, too mainstream. At the All-Star break? Nah, I will be busy watching and writing about the All-Star itself. Maybe at the season’s halfway point? Give me a break, that’s even more mainstream than writing at the end of the season. Let’s do it now, when the teams played 31-37 games. My 2014 NBA All-Star Ballot

I love the NBA All-Star game. Well, true, I used to love it more in previous years, when teams were actually playing some defense BEFORE the 4th quarter, but I do enjoy the game even now. It’s one of those rare occasions when you can see all the best players in the league sharing the same court.

Anyway, a couple of days ago I filled out my NBA all-star ballot, and I would like to share my picks. I think I started voting for the all-star game back in 2008, and it’s funny to see how some of my picks in 2014 are the same as they were back then. Continue reading →

Kobe passes MJ

Hey, Kobe passes! (ba-dum-tss)

So yeah, like you probably already know, Kobe Bryant passed Michael Jordan on the all-time scoring list. Does that mean he is greater than Michael?

Well, of course! Up until this game Michael was greater, and in fact he was still greater than Kobe all the way through the first quarter, but then, when Kobe scored those free-throws in the second, their greatness was reversed. All the books that have rankings of great NBA players in them were called back to the stores to hastily correct the order and to put Kobe before Michael, all the websites that have the same rankings underwent some massive editing, and even “Space Jam” inserted Kobe’s CGI head over Michael’s body to account for Kobe bumping Michael from the greatness pedestal. Triple Double Stories

Triple Doubles. A testament to all-aroundness in basketball. One has to be pretty damn versatile to achieve them. It’s not enough to score – almost anyone can score. Rebounds are a bit more difficult, but even guards can manage to collect 10+ of them in a game. Assists are always the most difficult issue – there are always fewer assists than rebounds. For example, the highest all-time assists average over the course of a whole season? 14.54. And this number is not even in the top-100 all-time best rebounding seasons. However, if you have the assists – you can more easily get the rebounds, than the other way around. This is why guards were always more dominant in the triple-doubles department – they usually have the assists. Sure, there are also triple doubles with blocks (rare) and steals (extremely rare), but the points-rebounds-assists combo is the most popular one, by far. Continue reading →

I think that I’ve never seen a full NBA game with Milwaukee Bucks in it, but I have been following Giannis Antetokounmpo and reading about him ever since he came into the NBA – and despite the fact that I can’t pronounce his name proberly, I must say that damn, that kid got skillz!

Is Yao Ming the greatest REALLY TALL NBA player ever?

A brief post, just some things I thought about in the last few days.

1) Ray Allen – what’s up, yo? Man, don’t you want to decide already whether you’re coming back or not? I’ll make it simple for you – you do need to come back! It doesn’t really matter which team you’ll play for this season, just play! The season is already 10 games deep (+/-), and you don’t have that many games left to make 100+ three point field goals! I mean, you do want to break the tie with Reggie Miller and singlehandedly hold the record for most consecutive seasons with 100+ made treys, right? You both have 15 of those, which is cool, but isn’t it much much cooler to be the ONLY guy who has 16 consecutive seasons? Just make up your mind, cuz there ain’t that much time left! You’ll need to score a little bit more than 1.4 treys per game if you come back now and play in every single game. Now, last year you scored 1.59 treys per game, so that’s definitely doable, but still – come back now, or you’ll regret it until the end of time! Continue reading →

LeBron’s streak got a scare

Damn, I nearly got a heart attack when I checked the box score for Cleveland-Portland this morning.

Never mind that Cleveland lost, LeBron finished with only 11 points! His lowest total since 1867!

We’re very lucky that it was still in double digits and that his streak didn’t end. This was the 575th game in a row that LeBron scored in double digits, and now he equalled Karl Malone‘s record for the 3rd longest such streak EVAR. Next game he should bump Malone one place down. The NBA’s All-Time Record in Three Pointers Made

Hey, you! Yes you, with the eyes and the nose (sorry Voldemort)! Do you like three pointers? What a stupid question, of course you do! Who doesn’t like them?! Well, maybe Shaq… I mean, he made only one out of 22 attempts over his career. That’s even better than Kareem (1/18)!

Anyway, I really like three point shots. In the recent PC games from the NBA 2K series you have an option of a career mode, where you get the opportunity to built a player and play a whole career with him. And when I played that career mode, the first attribute that I always improved first was three point shooting. I really liked hitting them from downtown. Continue reading →

NBA’s 50+ and 60+ wins seasons

I looove keeping tabs on various sports-related statistics, like you probably already noted. Individual players’ stats are the main attraction of course, but team stats can be awesome too.

For example, how about this über-cool list I made of all the league’s franchises and the number of seasons they had which ended with 50+ and 60+ wins? 50 wins in a season is very good (although in the present Western Conference you could only guarantee yourself the 7th place with it), and 60 wins is a season for the ages. Let’s see how many of these good and great seasons each franchise had. All the data was collected via the awesome basketball-reference website. Continue reading →

Well, we’re back in business!

After a long hiatus, it’s time for a new post. And since the NBA season is not far off, this post will deal with the Scottish independence referendum. Or maybe we’ll deal with NBA awards. Yeah, let’s start with the NBA thingy and we’ll see how it goes. Maybe we’ll get to Scotland later on.

A lot of awards exist in the NBA. Most of them are given out yearly, so any information on them is readily available. However, the awards that I want to talk about are the not-yearly ones: NBA Player of the Month and NBA Player of the Week awards, or POM and POW as we shall call them from now on. I only hope there isn’t some porn-related acronym with the same letters. Continue reading →
